LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After completing this program, participants will be able to:

  • Identify ethical considerations in recognizing and assessing trauma, including the risks of overpathologizing and underpathologizing, and the ethical obligation to apply trauma-informed, culturally responsive screening practices.

  • Apply ACA Code of Ethics standards to the selection and use of theoretical models and evidence-based interventions, balancing evidence-based practice with cultural responsiveness and client values.

  • Evaluate the ethical use of practical clinical interventions — including psychoeducation, corrective emotional experiences, reparenting, boundary-setting, bibliotherapy, distress tolerance skills, and body-based approaches — with attention to client autonomy, cultural fit, and scope of competence.

  • Develop strategies for sustaining ethical clinical practice through ongoing competence assessment, appropriate referral, consultation as an ethical imperative, and resilience practices that reduce the risk of professional impairment.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

This 6-hour live, synchronous continuing education workshop explores the ethical dimensions of working with clients who come from traumatic upbringings. Grounded in the ACA Code of Ethics and informed by trauma research, participants will examine the ethical challenges of identifying trauma, selecting and applying theory, practicing with cultural responsiveness, and sustaining clinical resilience.

Rather than presenting ethics as abstract or rule-bound, this course highlights how ethical principles actively guide clinical practice — shaping assessment decisions, intervention strategies, boundaries, cultural attunement, and scope of practice. Through case vignettes and practical interventions, participants will learn to apply ethical standards to real-world situations in ways that empower client autonomy, prevent harm, and support sustainable clinical work.
